1970: Stanford Research Institute becomes independent from Stanford University on January 13.


1970: Shakey appears in Life Magazine as the world's first mobile robot able to reason about its environment.

     
   

1974: SRI's Energy Center explores the development of gas from oil, solid waste, and plant life (biomass) and studies crop and livestock wastes as alternative energies.

1974: SRI's Urban and Social Systems Division completes a seven-year Head Start and Follow Through Program designed to help disadvantaged children.

     
 

 

1974: SRI cosponsors a Moscow conference with the State Committee of the USSR Council of Ministers for Science and Technology.

1977: Stanford Research Institute is renamed SRI International on May 16.

1979: SRI sends its first official delegation to the People's Republic of China.

The institute establishes the SRI Fellowship award recognizing technical, scientific, and professional contributions of SRI staff members.

   

 

 


1979: William F. Miller is named SRI's president.
