1994: SRI establishes the Mimi
Award as the highest recognition for staff members who have fostered
the personal and professional growth of their co-workers.
1994: William P. Sommers becomes SRI's president.
1995: SRI spins off Nuance Communications to bring SRI's natural language speech recognition software to market. The technology was first to be deployed by a major corporation when Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. used it for over-the-phone stock quotes in 1996.
1996: SRI and the Chinese Ministry of Chemical Industry cosponsor a conference, "The Chemical Industry and Technologies—Opportunities in China," in Beijing.
1996: The SRI Alumni Association is established to recognize former staff members whose professional contributions have had significant impact for staff, management, or clients.
1999: SRI establishes the Gibson Achievement Award to honor staff members whose contributions have had a noteworthy impact on the standard of living and on the peace and prosperity of society.
1998:BusinessWeek dubs SRI "Spin-off City"—an innovation engine that creates new businesses to capitalize on SRI technology developments and move them into the marketplace.
