Infectious diseases represent a global public health challenge, making the discovery of safe and effective therapeutics an imperative. SRI Biosciences’ Center for Infectious Disease and Biodefense Research employs state-of-the-art tools and broad approaches to

  • Increase understanding of infectious disease mechanisms
  • Identify and validate new molecular targets for disease intervention
  • Develop small-molecule and protein-based therapeutics and vaccines
  • Create new diagnostics and prophylactics

The Center brings a wealth of experience and diverse scientific interests to our mission of benefiting mankind by creating new opportunities and approaches for defeating the world's most significant infectious disease threats. A number of the diseases we study disproportionately affect the poor in remote rural areas, urban slums, and places of political conflict. They are often a major barrier to escaping extreme poverty.

With more than 50 years of experience in anti-infectives research, we are uniquely positioned to discover and develop new drugs to treat bacterial, viral, and parasitic diseases. SRI's research successes in anti-infectives include halofantrine, a drug used to treat malaria, and vidarabine, a drug that blocks the spread of the herpes simplex virus.
