Focus @ SRI:
Applied Mechanics
Title:
Laboratory Director, Poulter Laboratory of Applied
Mechanics
Day in the Life @ SRI:
Our Laboratory investigates the effects of impacts and explosions. In a typical day, I spend half my time meeting with staff on projects such as investigation of weapons effects, mitigating the effects of a terrorist bomb or using propellants to shake the ground to study earthquake effects on structures. The remainder of my day is focused on new project development and client interaction.
Why SRI?
This is one of the few places I know where we can blow things up and get paid for it! The intellectual challenge and the high quality staff are unsurpassed.
What do you find most rewarding about your work at SRI?
The freedom to pursue challenging and important problems and produce a useful result.
Inspiration/Perspiration:
We have a very strong team. We motivate and challenge each other to do our best, innovative work. I am just as excited about working here now as when I joined 32 years ago.
Away from the Office:
Through SRI, I have a membership at the Stanford Golf Course and play there when I get a chance. I recently got a hole-in-one in Ireland!
Proudest Accomplishment:
Leading a group in which 95% of the energy is used to help each other.
Words of Wisdom for New SRI Team Members:
Find a successful senior staff member and find out what he/she does right.
