Meet . . . Ed Davis
Focus @ SRI:
Protecting and exploiting SRI's intellectual property (IP)
Title:
Senior IP Advisor and IP Office Manager
Day in the Life @ SRI:
After I read my email, I work closely with inventors, laboratory and program managers, division vice presidents, business development people, contract administrators, SRI's legal department, outside patent counsel, and our clients to identify valuable IP and determine how to obtain and maintain the best patent protection of it for SRI and for clients. I assist in the licensing process, both negotiating and compliance, to ensure the maximum benefit to SRI from its IP, as well as high value to our clients.
I also assist the legal department in enforcement and other IP-related matters. I conduct IP training seminars for SRI staff members and oversee operation of SRI's IP office.
My days are highly variable, but always busy. The best part is getting an early look at the amazing creativity of SRI's inventors.
Before SRI:
There was no "before SRI" that matters!
Academics:
B.A. and M.A. in biology, San Francisco State University
J.D., University of San Francisco
Why SRI?:
Where else can one find and enjoy the kind of creative freedom that SRI provides? This has fostered a collegial atmosphere of highly creative people who are fun to be around.
Inspiration (what motivates you):
My personal curiosity about how things work, and being around others with whom to share a collective curiosity
Away from the Office:
I enjoy eating, fine wine, skiing, bicycling, traveling, music (classical and jazz), and above all my family, especially my new grandson.
Languages:
I'm working on mastering "English," the American version, not the queen's.
Proudest Accomplishment:
My research in the area of neurophysiology and the sensory basis of behavior (albeit in mosquitoes)
Words of Wisdom for New SRI Team Members:
Take responsibility for yourself. Your future at SRI is what you make it yourself. Develop an entrepreneurial spirit. Be inclusive and be included. Be considerate and be considered.
Favorites:
The CAMRA: "Best Beers"; C. Northcote Parkinson: "Parkinson's Law"; detective novels; movies: old comedies, anything by Hitchcock, or films like "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (but not the Terminator series)
