Gary Brown of SRI International

Gary Brown is director of the Center for Maritime and Port Security at SRI International’s Marine Technology Program in St. Petersburg, Florida. His responsibilities include the role of principal investigator for a $36.5 million government contract to develop a Comprehensive Maritime Domain Awareness System for Tampa Bay.

Brown retired from the Marine Corps in 1993, attaining the rank of Brigadier General. His last active duty assignment was Deputy Commanding General, Marine Forces Pacific. Subsequent to his military career, he has 10 years of management experience in the aerospace and security industries with Lockheed Martin and L-3 Communications Corporation. While employed by Lockheed Martin, he was director of the $1.9B U.S. Army Communications and Electronics Command Rapid Response to Critical Systems Requirements contract.

He later served at the director level with L-3 Communications, Security Systems Division. His responsibilities included principal investigator for the Federal Aviation Administration-funded ARGUS Computer Tomography Explosive Detection Development Program, and Field Services Director for the L-3 checked baggage explosive detection systems deployed at multiple airports throughout the nation.

Prior to moving to his current position, Brown was director of programs at the University of South Florida’s Center for Ocean Technology. In 2008, he was appointed to membership on the National Maritime Security Advisory Committee by Michael Chertoff, then Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
