Meet Youssef Iguider, Director of Business Development, Tokyo, Japan

Focus at SRI:
My role is to strengthen the "International" part of SRI International, by introducing our clients in Japan to SRI’s values, while I help commercialize the technology solutions of SRI’s Information & Computing Sciences (ICS) and Engineering & Systems (ES) divisions.
Day in the Life at SRI:
My days at SRI are always busy but very dissimilar. A significant portion of my time is devoted to introducing SRI's computing and systems engineering technology solutions and capabilities to the Japanese market. This involves communicating with potential clients, delivering seminars, publishing articles, and attending tradeshows.
It's very important to me to listen carefully to the important goals and needs of our clients, and to work closely with SRI’s business and engineering teams in the Menlo Park headquarters. Together, we develop and propose tailored solutions to our clients.
Before SRI:
I am very happy to have landed at SRI, the homeland of so many innovation ”big-bangs”, after spending 18 years in the IT and telecom fields. Before SRI, I held various positions at Panasonic and Cisco, which gave me a multidisciplinary background in R&D, product marketing, OEM and alliances, compliance and regulations, technology solution sales, and international business development.
By working cross-geographically, cross-culturally, and cross-functionally with multinational groups in Japan, the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East, I acquired a good understanding of international business challenges.
Academics:
Ph.D. in Computer Science, University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo, Japan (Laureate of the Japanese Government “Monbusho” Scholarship)
M.Sc. in Computer Science, Odessa Polytechnic Institute, Odessa, Ukraine (Laureate of the Scholarship of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine)
Why SRI?
It's exciting to be part of an organization that is positively impacting the world with its high-value innovations. As someone whose professional life began in engineering, I also value interfacing with academia and commercial markets alike. I work in an intellectually challenging environment, where I interact with talented colleagues. I can offer clients cutting-edge technology solutions that add real value to their businesses.
Inspiration and Motivation:
Personally, I am deeply inspired by the honesty, goodwill, and the always-ready-to-help attitude of my late father. Professionally, my inspiration comes from carefully listening to my clients’ needs, closely interacting with bright, hard-working colleagues, and offering high-value, client-focused solutions. I embrace opportunities to acquire new skills so I can help address challenges.
What has changed in your field since you began your career, and what new or exciting trends are you seeing?
During my undergrad years, I coded software programs for a computer that occupied almost an entire floor, digging endless holes into punch cards. Today, innovations such as SRI's Speech Technology allow me to “speak” with the computer using my voice — and I can carry that computer inside my pocket.
Thinking about the future of technology, I believe that by promoting a culture of systematic innovation such as SRI’s, we can tap into an ocean of innovation opportunities and positively impact the way people live, work, and play. I believe much of the excitement is still ahead of us. Much like when Thomas Edison invented the electric light bulb (only about four generations ago) -- people thought this was the farthest humans could reach in high technology. We now know electricity translated into many breakthroughs, from refrigeration to satellite communication. With today’s cutting-edge technologies, we are witnessing another "light bulb" of advancement. This time, however, we are riding a much faster "bullet train" of innovation.
Proudest professional accomplishment:
Hopefully, my proudest accomplishment is still ahead of me. I am honored to have been decorated by the King of Morocco, inside the Japanese Imperial Palace, for the volunteer work that I do to bring Japan and Morocco closer to each other. I was also fortunate to play a leading role in launching the first Cisco IP telephony product line to the Japanese market. I am still relatively new to SRI, but by putting to use my international-business skills I was able to add new values to SRI’s largest licensing project for speech technology - An involvement which is highly valued by our Japanese client.
Languages:
I feel blessed I can reach to my friends, colleagues, and clients internationally, through five languages: Arabic, English, French, Japanese, and Russian. The dream to annex Spanish and Chinese (Mandarin) keeps haunting me.
Words of wisdom for SRI colleagues:
Always keep your enthusiastic spirit alive. Meanwhile, tune in on client-focused thinking. As formulated by SRI’s disciplined approach to innovation, it all starts by carefully listening to your client’s goals and understanding their needs, then go that extra mile to innovatively address those needs.
