Jacqueline Vazquez-DeRose

Jacqueline Vazquez-DeRose is a research scientist in Center for Neuroscience and Metabolic Diseases in SRI Biosciences. In this role, she works on a variety of projects, involving behavioral, pharmacologic, and cellular techniques to address scientific hypotheses aimed at understanding arousal state control, neurochemical alterations during neurodegenerative disease, and the neuropharmacology of reward and addiction. She has led projects aimed at identifying cholinergic cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in sleep–wake regulation. She has characterized whole protein identifications from brain regions known to participate in arousal states. She has also investigated the role of nociceptin’s effects on cocaine reward and addiction.

More recently, Vazquez-DeRose has focused on integrative behavioral studies using in vivo microdialysis and analytical neurochemistry. At SRI, she runs an in vivo microdialysis facility and neurotransmitter analytical laboratory. SRI’s Behavioral Neurochemistry Laboratory offers microdialysis in vivo models combined with behavioral assessment. Typical pharmacokinetics and drug metabolism studies are performed. Her laboratory also offers quantitative analytical services of biomarkers, neurotransmitters, and metabolites in microdialysis samples, CSF, serum, and tissue. Vazquez-DeRose has published numerous research papers on these topics.

Prior to joining SRI, Vazquez-DeRose worked as a neurology and anesthesiology postdoctoral fellow with Drs. Helen Baghdoyan and Ralph Lydic at the University of Michigan. There, she studied the role of cholinergic and GABAergic control of acetylcholine in the basal forebrain and the effect of GABA agonists and antagonists on cholinergic modulation of the pontine reticular formation during sleep.

Vazquez-DeRose received a B.S. in psychology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She also received an M.S. in biomedical sciences from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Her Ph.D. in neuroscience is from Pennsylvania State University.
