People
Creating a culture
of innovation depends directly on the individuals who work at
SRI. More than 1,400 employees worldwide provide the innovative
thinking and technology leadership that sets SRI apart. Here's a
chance to meet some of our team and learn why they joined SRI - you may discover that you would like to join the team, too. Visit Careers @ SRI for descriptions of current openings.

Focus @ SRI: Cancer Biology
Title: Director, Cancer Biology Program
Day in the Life @ SRI:
Since most of my team's work involves research supported by the National
Cancer Institute, a typical day consists of designing and evaluating basic
studies of human cancer cells. These studies usually involve various protein
analyses and gene expression experiments (e.g., evaluating gene chip data).
We also work with biotech companies investigating problems such as changes
in gene and protein expression in normal cells exposed to drugs or various
stresses. It's a full-time effort, and I usually work a 10- to 12-hour
day to keep up with SRI's findings and the current scientific literature.
Why SRI?
SRI allows me to pursue basic and applied research without being in a
university or traditional corporate environment. SRI gives considerable
freedom to its research scientists, including the pursuit of interdisciplinary
collaborations that are typically only possible at a university.
What do you find most rewarding about your work at SRI?
SRI has remarkable people. I also value the opportunity
to create and pursue my own ideas and research projects.
Inspiration/Perspiration:
I am highly motivated when I find other SRI researchers who want to work
with us. There is great potential for achievement here for imaginative
people who want to work hard.
Away from the Office:
The San Francisco Peninsula is a paradise for cycling. I try to get on
my road bike as often as possible and cruise the magnificent terrain just
outside of Silicon Valley or in the North Bay, including the wine country.
Proudest Accomplishment:
To be employed as a scientist. I hope to do a lot of exciting research
over the next few years.
Words of Wisdom for New SRI Team Members:
Listen to established staff with respect, but think independently. Realize
that you must be self-motivated to succeed at SRI, even when working as
part of a team.
