Meet Our People
SRI's innovative thinking depends directly on the people who work
here. Meet members of our team and learn why they joined SRI
you may discover that you would like to join the team, too. Visit
Careers @ SRI for descriptions of current openings.
Meet . . . David Stout
Focus @ SRI:
Chemical process simulation and modeling, process chemistry, and polyketones
Title and Program:
Chemical Engineer, Chemical Science and Technology, Physical Sciences Division
Day in the Life @ SRI:
My work day usually starts off with coffee and email, and then things vary day to day. They often include creating and running chemical process simulations and models, analyzing and organizing data, carrying out reactions in my lab, creating presentations or reports for clients, project meetings, and of course more email.
Academics:
B.S. in Chemical Engineering and B.S. in Chemistry, University of California, Irvine
Why SRI?
After finishing my undergraduate education, I ultimately wanted a career that would allow me to apply both my chemical engineering and chemistry knowledge. SRI, which I joined shortly after school, was one of the few places presenting that opportunity.
Inspiration and Motivation:
A good challenging problem, as it causes me to focus and think of new and creative ways of trying to solve it. The harder the challenge the better, and the more I work at it.
Away from the Office:
Recently, I have picked up my guitar again and am attempting to finally properly teach myself how to play. I also like to read, watch movies, listen to music, enjoy the company of friends, and travel to southern California as much as possible to visit family and friends.
Languages:
English and a small amount of German
Proudest Professional Accomplishment:
Since I am still extremely early in my professional career, thus far my proudest accomplishment is graduating from college and finding a position where I feel that I can make a difference.
Words of Wisdom for New SRI Team Members:
Meet as many people as possible and get to know not just those immediately around you. You will come across some of the most interesting people and will find yourself constantly learning. As a research scientist, knowing more people will present you with the opportunity to work on more projects.
Favorites:
I love a variety of music, such as the Dead Can Dance, Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and the Tea Party. Ultimately, I would like to be able to play guitar like the late Michael Hedges. As for books, Carter Beats the Devil by Glen David Gold. For light-hearted humor I enjoy Homestar Runner.
