Custom Synthesis
Many of the synthesis activities in support of developing a new drug are essential, but take away from the focus of the research team. The activities may be transient and can become expensive tasks when performed in-house. Outsourcing these tasks to an organization like SRI is a good way to ensure that you are moving your products through the pipeline in a timely and cost-effective manner. We can help.
Capabilities
From designing new targets to developing better chemical processes, we are here to serve your needs. We have more than 50 years of experience in providing research services for the pharmaceutical industry. SRI's chemists are skilled at performing complex, multistep syntheses and solving difficult chemistry-related problems. We have expertise in directed library design, chiral syntheses and the use of bioisosteres. Some of the complex targets we have synthesized are
- Artemesin antimalarials
- Benzotriazine anticancer agents
- Carbapenem antibiotics
- Steroidal HRT and anticancer agents
- Peptidomimetic antihypertensives
- Catechin chemopreventives
- Methotrexate anticancer agents
SRI's research facilities include modern synthesis equipment, a suite of analytical equipment for the complete characterization of compounds, and special laboratories for the synthesis of hazardous materials and radiochemicals.
We have assisted clients and partners by
- Providing the NCI, NIA, NIAID, and the NIMH with pure compounds for their research
- Developing a reversible derivatization of the key intermediate of a fermentation process that led to >95% recovery of the material in >95% purity and circumvented the need for costly chromatography steps
- Developing alternative reaction conditions to replace a highly flammable reagent with a nonflammable one - the modified reaction could be safely scaled to give multiple kilogram quantities of material
- Identifying and synthesizing side products, degradation products, and metabolite standards in support of investigational new drug (IND) filings
- Developing an improved chemical process that significantly reduced the number of reaction steps and chromatographic purifications - resulting in far lower production costs
- Developing a chiral synthesis route to confirm structural identity of target compounds
