SRI offers a variety of neurobiology services, including

Neuroanatomy

• Immunohistochemistry
• In situ hydridization (radioactive and nonradioactive probes)
• Basic histology and staining techniques.

In vitro neurophysiology

• Brain slice preparation
• Whole-cell current and voltage clamp recordings
• Pharmacological analysis of membrane currents and synaptic transmission.

In vitro neurobiology assays

• Primary and cell line assays to screen potential neurotrophic factors and protectants, excitotoxins and neurotoxins
• Primary neuronal and glial tissue models to screen compounds for effects on cell survival, neurite outgrowth, and myelination.
• compound evaluation against known agonist/antagonist in receptor-binding functional assays and isolated tissue preparations

Neuronal stem cell assays

• Quantitative assessment of neuronal stem cell proliferation and survival
• Effects of neuroactive compounds on neurogenesis and gliogenesis
• CNS regeneration with in vivo stimulation of neural precursors.

Molecular Biology

• RNA isolation and analysis for specific brain regions
