From basic and applied research to development and testing of advanced systems, SRI is advancing technologies in power generation, energy storage, alternative fuels, more efficient manufacturing processes, potable water production, biodegradable materials and more effective methods for destroying hazardous waste. We also conduct environmental impact assessments and design technologies for noise suppression and vibration control.

Our innovations for the energy and environment include

• Solar technology: SRI has developed a cost-efficient technology to produce the silicon used in solar panels.
• Assisted hydrothermal oxidation: SRI patented this environmentally safe, cost-effective method for disposal of hazardous materials such as wastewater, chlorinated wastes, chemical weapons and explosives.
• Hydrogen combustion tests: To help Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) prepare for the use of hydrogen as fuel, SRI performed hydrogen burn tests to mitigate hazards from hydrogen leaks.
