The Center for GeoSpace Studies (CGS) specializes in the study of the fundamental processes governing the nature of the upper atmosphere and space environment. These studies involve experiments using incoherent scatter radar, satellite and optical instruments, and radiowave diagnostics. The staff also conducts basic physics research in ionospheric/magnetospheric physics, middle atmosphere/lower thermosphere, and stratosphere/troposphere.
Under the auspices of the National Science Foundation (NSF), CGS operates, manages, and conducts research at the Sondrestrom Research Facility in Greenland, and the Resolute Bay Early Polar Cap Observatory in Canada. With the support of NSF and NASA, CGS coordinates the operation of facilities at Altair, Marshall Islands on an occasional basis for basic ionospheric research.
