Database Replication and Consistency Management

OSCAR is the result of several years of research and development in the replication and consistency management of internetwork systems that are characterized by time-varying bandwidth on its data-transport links, and by frequent network partitions. Our approach incorporates a novel technique, called mediation, to ensure the efficient, reliable propagation of replicated information. OSCAR achieves mutual consistency among internetwork replicates of a database by using data semantics to resolve update conflicts. OSCAR is currently used by the U.S. Army to manage a distributed database of weather information.
