Department of Commerce/National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (DOC/NOAA)

For over 20 years, SRI's Envirotechnical Program has supported the U.S. Department of Commerce and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the evaluation of proposed sites for new facilities, including preparation of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents in conformance with NOAA Administrative Order 216-6: Environmental Review Procedures for Implementing the NEPA. As early as 1983, the Envirotechnical Program prepared the Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement for the tri-agency Next Generation Weather Radar (also known as WSR-88D) Program.

This effort continued through the 1980s and 1990s with the preparation of tiered environmental assessments (EAs) and findings of no significant impacts (FONSIs) for over 100 proposed weather forecast offices and 200 weather radar sites nationwide, including WSR-88Ds throughout the states of Hawaii and Alaska. Since the 1990s, we have supported a wide range of NOAA initiatives proposed by virtually every NOAA line office.
