Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary Headquarters and Visitor Center
SRI's Envirotechnical Program conducted scoping, research, and analysis leading to an environmental assessment for the National Marine Sanctuaries Program’s proposed Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary visitor center and office relocation in Alpena, Michigan. This project involved redevelopment of a waterfront industrial complex for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) facilities with multiple functions.
The proposed facility at the preferred location included Sanctuary administrative offices, marine archaeology research facilities, a NOAA vessel homeport, and a state-of-the-art exhibits display. The proposed facility has completed its NEPA process, been funded, and engineered for installation in 2005.
