National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System
The National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) is a tri-agency program formed by the U.S. Air Force, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration. SRI has provided environmental support to the program for many years and continues to provide exemplary program support. Tasks performed by SRI include developing a programmatic environmental safety and health evaluation document in conformance with the Department of Defense (DoD) Directive 5000.1, DoD Instruction 5000.2, and the National Security Space Acquisition Policy (NSSAP 03-01). SRI is an active participant in regularly scheduled meetings of the environmental, health, and safety, and facilities working groups established by the program. SRI successfully prepared an environmental review document in conformance with Executive Order 12114 assessing potential environmental impacts of an NPOESS satellite communications facility proposed in Europe.
