SRI's Envirotechnical Program is providing environmental support services for the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA’s) Airport Surveillance Radar Model-11 (ASR-11) Program, which is installing 68 ASR-11s to serve airports across the U.S. ASR-11 is an automated radar that detects and tracks aircraft movements in terminal airspace. The ASR-11s are replacing aging ASR-7s and ASR-8s, which are typically 20 to 30 years old. SRI is assisting the ASR-11 Program Office by performing phase 1 and 2 environmental due diligence audits (EDDAs) in support of land acquisition, and environmental assessments (EAs), in conformance with the National Environmental Policy Act and FAA Orders 1050.1E and 1050.19A. For this Program, SRI International has prepared 35 EAs, 36 Phase 1 EDDAs and 3 Phase 2 EDDAs for proposed ASR-11s locations throughout the U.S., including Phase 1 EDDAs for properties in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. SRI has also assisted the ASR-11 Program by creating photosimulations of ASR-11s at selected sites, obtaining wetlands and coastal management zone approvals, designing and printing informational brochures and handouts, helping draft responses to Congressional and public inquiries, and arranging public information workshops.
