SRI assisted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in deploying a nationwide system of 47 Terminal Doppler Weather Radars (TDWRs) at airports across the nation. TDWR is an automated weather radar that provides air traffic controllers with real-time data on severe weather and wind shear events, thereby ensuring the safety and efficiency of aviation. SRI supported this effort by identifying candidate site locations for individual TDWR units, evaluating candidate sites against stringent technical siting criteria, and performing environmental review of the proposed radars in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act. SRI prepared two dozen environmental assessments and one environmental impact statement for the TDWR Program.
