Drug Discovery & Development and Health Sciences
SRI Biosciences
SRI Biosciences has all of the resources necessary to advance R&D programs from Idea to IND® — from initial discovery to investigational new drug applications that enable human clinical trials. We team with academia, biotech and pharma companies, foundations, and government agencies to solve important health problems around the globe. We carry out basic research, drug discovery, and drug development, including contract services. SRI's drug pipeline has yielded several marketed drugs, several additional drugs currently in human testing, and more than 10 programs in preclinical stages or early discovery. In our CRO business, we have advanced well over 100 drugs to clinical trials. We also work at the interfaces of science and technology to create novel platforms for the next generation of tools in diagnostics, drug delivery, medical devices, and systems biology.
Center for Health Sciences
SRI's Center for Health Sciences researches the factors that contribute to disease and illness, so that more effective treatments and prevention efforts can be developed. Researchers apply a multidisciplinary approach to understand complex issues at the interface of the basic sciences, clinical medicine, health care economics, and the regulatory and legal environments.
Medical product development
SRI has an array of experts from which just the right team can be assembled to meet specific medical product development needs. Our teams have worked on biosensors, ultrasonic scanners, blood pressure instruments, blood and tissue sampling devices, insulin delivery systems, digital X-ray systems, MRI, and more.
Computational biology
SRI's Bioinformatics Research Group performs research into new
computational methods for bioinformatics. This interdisciplinary group
of scientists also develops bioinformatics software, databases, and
ontologies. Selected projects include:
- The BioCyc Collection of Pathway/Genome Databases contains more than 1,000 databases, including:
- EcoCyc: A Model Organism Database for Escherischia coli K-12. The
EcoCyc project has integrated information on the E. coli genome, and on the E. coli metabolic and
genetic networks from more than 19,000 publications.
- MetaCyc: An encyclopedia of experimentally elucidated metabolic pathways and enzymes
derived from 1,800 organisms.
- The Pathway Tools software: Can be used to query, visualize, and analyze existing Pathway/Genome Databases from the BioCyc collection, and to create new Pathway/Genome
Databases for an annotated genome.
- BioWarehouse: A database
interoperation environment that supports data mining and integration of
multiple databases including the UniProt, BioCyc, NCBI Taxonomy, Genbank, CMR, ENZYME, Gene Ontology,
and KEGG databases.
- Lisp tools for bioinformatics: The BioDB-Loader toolkit loads
several bioinformatics databases into Lisp for facile processing.
