National Cancer Institute Awards Preclinical Development Contracts
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has awarded SRI two contracts to conduct toxicology, pharmacology, and pharmacokinetics studies. Researchers will examine the safety and efficacy of several potential treatments for cancer and other diseases of critical importance to the nation's health. SRI's long-standing support of NCI and its programs has led to numerous cancer treatment and prevention products. More info ›› |

SRI Evaluates Intervention Program for Students Coping with Trauma-Based Stress
Experiencing violent events at a young age can seriously affect physical and mental health, as well as academic achievement. To date, few scientific studies have examined the needs of students exposed to acute or chronic trauma. In partnership with the University of California, Los Angeles and Stanford University, SRI leads a three-year study of the Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) program, a school-based initiative in San Francisco. Intelligent, Immersive Training Systems Bridge the Classroom-to-Combat Gap
As today's armed forces confront insurgency, civil unrest, and new forms of asymmetrical warfare, proper training is crucial. SRI's visual intelligence systems supplement or replace human role players with computer-generated actors and objects that are superimposed onto the real scene—increasing proficiency and reducing cost.More info ›› |

New Findings May Lead to Improved Hydrogen Safety
Working with Sandia National Laboratories, SRI researchers have confirmed the mechanism by which electrostatic discharge can cause hydrogen to ignite. In recent research findings, the team recommends actions that hydrogen producers, users, and regulators can take to improve safety. The research, supported by the U.S. Department of Energy's Fuel Cell Technologies program, could help pave the way for the adoption of hydrogen as a clean source of energy.More info ›› |

Heroes in Defense of the Web
Philadelphia Inquirer
Worm: The First Digital World War—a book about the Conficker computer worm that threatens the Internet's livelihood—features the stories of 12 cyber security experts whom the author calls heroes of our time. Author Marc Bowden votes for SRI's Phil Porras as his favorite hero and describes him as "one of the first to study Conficker and to spearhead efforts to predict its behavior and defeat it."
That Used to Be Us: Thomas Friedman on Rebuilding the U.S. Brand
Forbes
In his new book, Friedman points to the challenges the U.S. faces today and relays comments on American competitiveness by some of the best known U.S. tech leaders. Among them is SRI's CEO Curtis Carlson, who maintains that the future lies with companies that encourage their lower-level employees to be critical thinkers.
Microrobots Could Take On Industrial-Scale Jobs
Fast Company
One of SRI's potentially most impactful innovations is quite small-scale,
measuring from just one millimeter to one centimeter across. Magnetically
levitated microrobots could revolutionize industrial manufacturing. The mini
'bots could be used for micro-assembly jobs in factories that fabricate
micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) chips, or for rapid prototyping of
structures that have embedded electronics, such as sensors and portable
diagnostic devices.

Q: Siri, Do You Know What's Special about the iPhone 4S?
A: Of course I know!
Apple launched the iPhone 4S in October with Siri, a voice-enabled virtual personal assistant that understands what you say and knows what you mean. Siri's technology was born from SRI's CALO project, the largest artificial intelligence project in U.S. history, which was funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. SRI spun out Siri as a new venture, and in February 2010 SRI announced the arrival of the Siri app for the iPhone 3GS. In April 2010, Apple acquired Siri from SRI. More info ››
Artificial Muscle Technology Gives Gaming a Pulse
JoyStick
A new case for the iPod Touch contains tactile ViviTouch electroactive polymer technology from SRI's spin-off Artificial Muscle. The technology lets you "feel the game" with rumbling fidelity. It is embedded in Mophie Pulse cases, which function as sensory peripherals for handheld devices. Artificial Muscle was acquired by Bayer MaterialScience in March 2010.
