Twins Sought for Seasonal Flu Vaccine Study
Is your family prepared for the upcoming flu season? Free seasonal flu vaccinations will be available to twins of various age groups, from children to the elderly, starting September 1st, as part of a research study led by Stanford University, teaming with SRI International, and sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. Immune responses will be studied with a goal to develop more effective vaccines. All volunteers will receive the licensed, approved vaccine that will be given to the public this flu season. For details about the study and to sign up, visit the Twin Research Registry™ at SRI International. |
Malaysian Leaders and SRI Executives Discuss the Innovation Economy
SRI’s CEO Curtis R. Carlson met with Malaysian leaders and presented a keynote address at a full-day event “Innovation and Creativity: The Innovation Imperative”, in Kuala Lumpur, on July 23. SRI executives also met with businesses in the region, and hosted an innovation development program with the Universiti Putra Malaysia and Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNITAR). |
A Closer Look at Auroral Arcs and Upper Atmosphere
New scientific findings are now available from the SRI-designed Advanced Modular Incoherent Scatter Radar (AMISR), a transportable system funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). AMISR is the first NSF-funded radar system built specifically for scientific research. Scientists use AMISR to study climate change and other processes linked to the transfer of energy and momentum from the surface of the sun to Earth’s atmosphere. Learn more about AMISR and download the one-page backgrounder. |
New Consortium Formed to Accelerate Fight Against Cancer
The National Cancer Institute has announced formation of the Chemical Biology Consortium (CBC), a new collaborative, independent partnership focused on advancing novel cancer therapeutics. SRI’s Center for Cancer Research leads the consortium, which will focus particularly on high-risk, under-represented areas. SRI’s Lidia Sambucetti will be the overall principal investigator of SRI’s CBC program and of the Comprehensive Chemical Biology Screening Center. |
Declaring War on Infectious Diseases

Infectious diseases can be extremely debilitating, are potentially life threatening, and spread rapidly to populations around the world. SRI Biosciences is studying such diseases, and is now also screening a library of existing drugs to determine efficacy against the H1N1 flu virus, with the goal of identifying alternatives to current therapies. This would make it easier to provide sufficient quantities of drugs to a broad population, should the current pandemic worsen.

Hitting the Snooze Button Too Often? Neurobiology Sheds Light on the Sleep/Wake Cycle
New discoveries in sleep disorders — from age-related disrupted patterns to narcolepsy — are presented in two papers by SRI researchers, featured in the “Neurobiology Select” section in the May 1 edition of the scientific journal Cell. Brain signals that control sleep and wakefulness, and neurotransmitters in the central nervous system, are discussed. |
Gates Foundation Awards Grant for Innovative Global Health Research
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded a $100,000 grant to SRI’s Center for Advanced Drug Research (CADRE) in Harrisonburg, Virginia as part of an initiative to support scientists around the world explore bold and unproven ways to improve health in developing countries. |
“Green” Coatings and Sustainable Glue Available for License
High-tech brings a new, “clean” dimension to common industrial applications. Sustainable construction materials, surface coatings for touch-screen devices, and anti-corrosion coatings for metal products offer competitive advantages to businesses concerned about the environment. Licenseable technologies from SRI in these areas may meet your needs. |

Humankind Looks at the Moon and Echoes Astronauts’ Voices
Wired
Ham radio operators and a cohort of enthusiastic Earth-moon-Earth (EME) talkers recently joined an early celebration of the 40th Apollo 11 anniversary. Large satellite dishes were borrowed around the world to allow for the voice bouncing. The "Dish", a 150-foot radio antenna operated by SRI in the Stanford foothills, was part of the global event.
Creativity Key to Survival of Early-Stage Biotech Companies
Silicon Valley San Jose Business Journal
Biotech companies’ uphill path from concept to market is long and arduous. For startups, partnerships with established organizations that bring expertise and funding to the table can make the difference between success and failure – where success means saving lives and failure equals shattering years of costly research efforts. SRI Biosciences – which functions as a nonprofit pharmaceutical company with a rich multidisciplinary pipeline – helps biotech startups bring their technologies forward and secure funding from the U.S. Government or third parties.
