Developing New Treatments for Heart, Lung, and Blood Diseases
Cardiorespiratory and blood diseases account for more than 40 percent of deaths annually in the U.S., with an associated economic burden projected for 2011 at $705 billion. The National Institute of Heart, Lung, and Blood Diseases (NHLBI) is funding SRI to advance novel therapeutics to the clinic in support of its Science Moving Towards Research Translation and Therapy (SMARTT) Program.More info ›› |

Technology Approach to Teaching Advanced Math Validated
The results are in: two SRI studies evaluating the effectiveness of the SimCalc program, a technology-based approach to teaching advanced math concepts, show that a broad range of middle schoolers can learn advanced algebra and calculus concepts without jeopardizing progress on basic math skills. The positive results from more than 100 schools were similar across genders, ethnic groups, and geography.More info ›› |

DoE Funds Bioinformatics Tools for Renewable Energy
The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded SRI a grant to expand SRI's MetaCyc database and enhance its Pathway Tools software. In the emerging area of bioenergy (renewable energy from biological sources), the grant will allow the international research community to benefit more widely from SRI's bioinformatics tools. Proteomics and Metabolic Disease Experts Join SRI Biosciences in Virginia
Dave Anderson, Ph.D., an expert in mass spectrometry and proteomics, and William Thomsen, Ph.D., a pharmaceutical drug discovery veteran, have joined SRI's Center for Advanced Drug Research (CADRE) at SRI Shenandoah Valley. They lead programs in proteomics—the study of proteins that make up living organisms—and metabolic disease drug discovery, two major areas of SRI Biosciences research. More info ›› |

In a recent episode of ABC's Private Practice, a patient was told there were no treatments left for her advanced cancer—but “the da Vinci robotic surgical console saved the day". Some 7.8 million viewers watched the device save the patient. The da Vinci system is manufactured by Intuitive Surgical, an SRI spin-off venture.
Watson Wins Jeopardy! 6 Artificial Intelligence Milestones
National Geographic
SRI's Shakey the Robot is featured among the top six artificial intelligence achievements, alongside recent celebrities like Watson. Shakey, created from 1966 to 1972, was the first mobile robot that could reason about its actions.
