As our 60th year comes to a close, independent research institute SRI International is innovating in more areas than ever. We're launching a marine science research facility in Florida, a new drug research facility in Virginia, helping develop new anti-infective and cancer drugs, and studying the effect of smoking cessation on sleep. It’s no wonder SRI was just named a "Silicon Valley Best Place to Work"!

Marine Technology R&D Facility in Florida Established

SRI has chosen St. Petersburg, Florida as the site for a new marine technology research facility. The new facility, which will be called SRI-St. Petersburg, will accelerate research and development of technologies related to ocean science, the maritime industry and port security. SRI's expansion into Florida is a collaboration with the University of South Florida's College of Marine Science and its Center for Ocean Technology, and is supported by the City of St. Petersburg, Pinellas County and the State of Florida.

In a statement, Florida Governor Jeb Bush noted that the new facility will position the state at the forefront of the nation's marine exploration and discovery efforts in ocean science, maritime industry, and port security.

Link between Smoking Cessation and Sleep Problems Studied

cigaretteSmoking remains one of the largest contributing factors to health problems in the U.S., responsible for at least 400,000 deaths per year, and is a leading cause of heart and lung disease. Medications currently used to help quit smoking can have side effects that result in sleep problems, leading to a less effective cessation program.

In a new study for the National Institutes of Health, SRI is investigating the effects of smoking cessation and related treatments on sleep. The study, conducted by SRI's Center for Health Sciences, is one of the first collaborations of its kind between scientists studying sleep and those studying nicotine addiction.

Changing Lives: A Study of Internet Usage by Low-Income Americans

Results are in on a study evaluating Internet usage among low-income Americans participating in a program that increases their access to technology. The report examined the impact of One Economy Technology programs in San Jose, California and Miami, Florida, which brought affordable computers and Internet access into the homes of 200 families.

The findings show that people able to access the Internet at home did so at higher rates than other low-income Americans. Program participants reported feeling more capable and less disadvantaged in relation to others. Not only did technology empower them to take action, but their lives were more emotionally enriched.

Café Scientifique Has New Home at SRI

SRI is the new host for Café Scientifique Silicon Valley. Café Scientifique is part of a growing international trend for "science cafes" that provide community forums to discuss science issues in plain English and outside of a traditional academic context. Café Scientifique’s monthly events are free and open to the public.

Café Scientifique Silicon Valley’s next event will be on January 9 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at SRI’s Menlo Park headquarters. Dr. Terry Root of Stanford University will speak on the impact of human-induced climate change on plants and animals. Her work suggests that protecting species on earth is no longer just a habitat protection issue, but also one of limiting climate change.
