Prominent Member of Stanford University Faculty and Silicon Valley Leader, James F. Gibbons, Joins SRI Board of Directors

Menlo Park, Calif. (February 23, 1998) -- SRI International has elected James F. Gibbons to serve on its Board of Directors. Gibbons has been a consultant to SRI on technology planning for several years and, since 1957, has been a distinguished member of the faculty at Stanford University. In 1996 Gibbons became Special Counsel to the President and Provost for Industry Relations.

Gibbons has consulted or served on boards for both start-up and public companies including Lockheed-Martin, Cisco Systems and Raychem. He has also served on committees working with the Presidential Science Advisor in the Nixon, Reagan and Bush administrations.

Gibbons' noteworthy research accomplishments have been primarily in the areas of semiconductor device analysis, process physics technology and solar energy. He has authored or co-authored several textbooks and nearly 300 papers. In 1972 he and colleagues from Stanford University and Hewlett-Packard developed the Tutored Video Instruction Technique, a model for education of engineers. In recent years, he applied that model as a means to improve productivity and quality in children1s education, particularly for children of migrant farm workers and at-risk teens.

Gibbons has received many awards, and he has been elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1997, he was inducted into the Santa Clara County Business Hall of Fame and was one of three chosen for the Silicon Valley Engineering Hall of Fame for "outstanding professional achievements and significant contributions to the Silicon Valley community."

Silicon Valley-based SRI International is one of the nation's largest research, technology development and consulting organizations. SRI provides corporations, governments and organizations worldwide with the resources needed to compete effectively in today1s changing global environment.
