SRI International's 'Internet
Chameleon' Technology Powers AlterEgo Adaptive Network For Wireless Web
Premier R&D Organization Provides Patent-Pending Technology Enabling
Scalable Delivery of Adapted Web Content to Any Wireless Device
REDWOOD CITY and MENLO PARK, Calif. (June 5, 2000) - SRI International, a leading independent technology innovator, and
AlterEgo Networks, the leading provider of Adaptive Network Services for the wireless Internet, today announced a technology licensing and
equity sharing relationship. AlterEgo, the latest company to build its
business around SRI-developed technology, gains exclusive rights to
Internet Chameleon, software technology developed by SRI that promises
to play a major role in strengthening the infrastructure of the
developing wireless Internet.
AlterEgo Networks has built upon the core Internet Chameleon
technology - derived from a broad group of U.S. government funded
research initiatives at SRI aimed at improving data communications
over highly distributed and diverse networks - to create the industry's
first Adaptive Network. The Adaptive Network, and the Adaptive
Network Services it provides, is the first scalable, service-based network infrastructure
that unobtrusively adapts and distributes rich, customized web content
and applications at high speeds to users accessing the Internet via a
variety of wireless and connected devices, including PDAs, cell
phones, pagers, mobile laptops and a range of Internet appliances.
"The explosive growth of the Internet is fueling demand for wireless
Internet access. SRI International has combined its long-standing
experience in Internet technologies with its expertise in distributed
and wireless computing to address the challenges associated with
wireless access," said Curt Carlson, President and CEO of SRI
International. "SRI's Internet Chameleon has enormous potential to
substantially strengthen the developing worldwide infrastructure of
the wireless Internet. As the basis for AlterEgo's Adaptive Network
Service, it will play a key role in enabling the scalable delivery of
rich content and applications to users accessing the wireless Internet
from any type of device."
"AlterEgo and SRI share a common vision for the potential application
of advanced distributed architectures optimized for the emerging
wireless Internet," said Richard Ling, AlterEgo Networks' President
and CEO. "The technology inherent in Internet Chameleon is a giant
step toward that vision. As the foundation for our Adaptive Network
Service, it allows AlterEgo Networks to significantly raise the bar in
performance and functionality for dynamically adapting and
distributing rich Internet content over high-speed networks."
About Internet Chameleon
The development of Internet Chameleon originated at SRI through
U.S. Government-funded initiatives to address the improvement of the
quality-of-service (QoS) of communications in highly distributed and
heterogeneous networks, such as the Internet. SRI applied the
technology to problems associated with delivering Internet content to
a variety of devices (desktop, PCs, cell phones, PDAs, laptops, web appliances, etc.) through different
networks (dial-up, broadband, wireless, satellite, etc.).
AlterEgo has combined the proprietary Internet Chameleon adaptation
technology with an ultra-high-performance network infrastructure.
Together, they create an adaptive network service provider framework
that will produce optimal user experiences for users of varying device
types, at all performance levels. AlterEgo's combination of technology
and network infrastructure will make it possible for content producers
to "adapt once and publish anywhere" cost effectively, thereby
delivering consistent quality across platforms.
About SRI
Silicon Valley-based SRI International (www.sri.com) is one of the
world's largest independent research, technology development and
consulting organizations. Founded in 1946 as the Stanford Research
Institute, SRI has been meeting the strategic needs of global markets
for more than 50 years. As part of its strategy to bring its
technologies to the marketplace, SRI licenses its
technologies, forms strategic partnerships and creates spin-off
companies. SRI and its subsidiary Sarnoff Corp. have formed more than
20 spin-offs in information technology, biotechnology, healthcare,
education and web-based services.
About AlterEgo Networks
