SRI International Receives Polymer Patent
Portfolios from Shell Oil Company
MENLO PARK, Calif. - July 1, 2002 - Shell Oil Company has donated patents related to CARILON® and CARILITE polyketones to SRI International, a leading nonprofit research institute, SRI announced today.
The polymers disclosed in these patents are of immediate interest to SRI for their price/performance ratio and many applications across a broad spectrum of industries. SRI, which performs contract R&D and licenses technologies to clients worldwide, plans to incorporate the patents into its own suite of polymer technologies.
"The technologies in these patents extend SRI's own work in polymers and polymerization catalysis," said Curtis Carlson, SRI's president and CEO. "We're looking forward to creating value for our clients through our enhanced resources so that together we can introduce new products to the market," he continued.
The CARILON polymers are new engineering thermoplastics with exceptional chemical resistance and barrier properties, high-temperature strength, wear resistance, and low cost. The CARILITE polymers relate to new thermoset materials for use as high-performance adhesives. CARILITE does not release the volatile compounds known to be released from some current adhesives, and it is cost-competitive with current adhesives.
SRI has extensive experience in polymerization catalysis and has recently made advances in a patented catalyst system for producing multimodal polyolefins. SRI's polymer products offer lower processing costs, greater strength and elasticity, and environmental advantages compared to competitive products. SRI has licensed a variety of its engineering polymer technologies, and other polymers are being developed for energy, consumer, automotive, and industrial applications.
