SRI Technology At Core of New U.S. Postal Service Letter Sorting System
Two SRI-developed modules – an address block locator and word recognition system
– are parts of the new system. In addition, the co-processor includes
optical character recognition (OCR) software and directory search
software. The system, which runs on multiple Pentium-based computers,
uses an electronic camera to image the front face of letters, identify
the destination address and determine its delivery point barcode.
The USPS handles more than 600 million letters and packages each day. The new MLOCR system will be used as part of a pilot project in 250 of the Postal Services busiest sites.
"Our work with the U.S. Postal Service underscores SRI’s value in bringing multidisciplinary ideas together to create new solutions for clients. By combining expertise in software programming, imaging and robotics, SRI was able to help create a system that will deliver measurable benefits to the U.S. Postal Service and its customers," said Dr. Prasanna Mulgaonkar, director of the Advanced Automation Technology Center at SRI.
SRI has worked with the U.S. Postal Service since the early 1980s developing advanced imaging, recognition algorithms and software. When SRI’s team began work on address block locator technology in 1984, the creation of a parcel sorting and imaging system was considered impossible. Within two years, SRI had successfully demonstrated multi-sided parcel imaging and proved the feasibility of address block location. With continued technology improvements, the parcel sorting system could handle up to 30 parcels per minute. Today’s version includes the same basic address block algorithms improved and ported to a high-end desktop computer.
SRI will continue to work with the U.S. Postal Service to improve algorithms, upgrade barcode detection functionality and reading, enhance handwritten address discrimination systems and incorporate refinements into the co-processor system.
