Rosettex Signs Five-Year, $24 Million Contract with U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM)
ARLINGTON, Va., October 21, 2002 - Rosettex Technology & Ventures Group - a joint business venture of SRI International and Sarnoff Corporation - has been awarded a five-year contract from the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey to develop and prototype advanced technologies and systems in military communications, command and control, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance applications. The agreement has a potential value of $24 million.
Initial development projects include satellite-on-the-move communications,
mobile ad hoc wireless networking, and visualization technology
for situational awareness in Command, Control, Communications, Computing
and Intelligence (C4I) environments.
By leveraging Rosettex's unique business model-combining highly collaborative, government-focused technology development with expertise in venture financing and commercialization-CECOM will be able to accelerate delivery of new electronic systems that serve the critical information needs of the American defense personnel.
Rosettex will lead a team of currently more than 40 technology-focused organizations-including private companies, academic institutions, systems integrators, market analyst firms, and research organizations-to rapidly develop these systems for both military and commercial use.
Venture Fund Accelerates Technology Development and Deployment for Government
To help bring these innovative technologies to both the military and commercial marketplace more quickly, a seed fund-the Rosettex Venture Fund-invests in private companies with technologies and products that address the government's national security and information technology needs. The fund seeks to commercialize technical advances, attract entrepreneurs, and harness a wealth of knowledge in the private sector. This approach allows CECOM and other government organizations to gain early access to emerging technology, which is critical for acquisition planning.
Over time, the technologies developed for CECOM could move a new generation of information technologies into industrial and consumer use while serving the military purposes for which they were originally intended.
"The model provided under this contract allows the U.S. Army CECOM to leverage science and technology dollars through the use of venture capital," said Mr. Robert Doto, Director of the Research Development and Engineering Center at U.S. Army CECOM. "In this way, we can accelerate the development and fielding of information technologies for the warfighter."
