SRI International Names Edward G. "Ted" Spack as Senior Director
of PharmaSTART Program
MENLO PARK, California - December 1, 2003 - SRI International, a leading independent
research institute based in Silicon Valley, announced today that Edward
G. “Ted” Spack, Ph.D., has joined SRI as a senior director in its Biosciences
Division. In this role, Dr. Spack will coordinate PharmaSTART,
an unprecedented collaboration of world-leading research organizations
that have joined forces to translate unrealized drug research investments
into potentially life-saving drugs.
The PharmaSTART consortium's founding members are Stanford University;
the University of California, San Diego; the University of California,
San Francisco; and the UCSF campus of the California Institute for Quantitative
Biomedical Research (QB3). The University of California, Berkeley also
recently joined the consortium.
Through PharmaSTART, SRI offers drug development and consultation services,
including guidance on government funding opportunities, to the consortium
members' primary investigators. For each qualified project, SRI provides
up to 30 hours of complimentary consulting services to create a comprehensive
development plan. Each plan identifies the steps required to bring the
drug into the clinic efficiently and according to Food and Drug Administration
guidelines.
In addition to his PharmaSTART role, Dr. Spack will focus on growing
SRI's business in developing biological medicines, especially vaccines
and antibody therapies to control biothreat agents and infectious diseases
such as HIV and SARS.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Spack has worked on a wide range of
therapeutic targets, including autoimmunity, infectious disease, and cancer,
using a wide range of drug approaches, including recombinant biologics,
humanized monoclonal antibodies, small molecules, and gene therapy.
Most recently, Dr. Spack was senior director of applied research for
InterMune, Inc. [Nasdaq: ITMN] a California biopharmaceutical company
focused on development of drug therapies for pulmonary and infectious
diseases and cancer. Dr. Spack's accomplishments at InterMune include
identification and humanization of a monoclonal antibody that blocks toxin
delivery.
Prior to InterMune, Dr. Spack was director of product discovery and director
of immunology for Valentis, Inc. [Nasdaq: VLTS], which designs DNA-based
therapeutics, with a current emphasis on cardiovascular applications.
He also worked at Anergen, Inc. (since acquired by Corixa Corporation),
where he was program director for multiple sclerosis (MS) and myasthenia
gravis drug development efforts.
Dr. Spack has participated in the design and implementation of 10 clinical
trials, served on the board of directors of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation
of America, is an advisory member of several medical societies, has authored
more than 30 publications, and has been an invited speaker for dozens
of presentations. He received a postdoctoral fellowship in immunology
from Stanford University, a Ph.D. in cell biology from Johns Hopkins University,
and a B.S. from Muhlenberg College.
