SRI Story Kit: Ocean Research

Ocean Research

SRI's Marine Technology Program team has significant experience designing and deploying oceanographic sensors to study chemical changes in marine environments. SRI's technologies could, for example, be used to map oil plumes resulting from the Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

headphone icon Larry Langebrake, Marine Technology Program Director, on Ocean Research and the BP Oil Spill:

- Part 1: a Q&A about the three most important aspects of the spill. Also learn how hydrocarbons move through the water column, the unknowns on how benthic organisms will be affected by the oil spill, how the topology of the ocean floor determines the movement of hydrocarbons, and the importance of data sets collected by SRI in 2007 and 2009. Measurements performed in the Gulf of Mexico with SRI's Underwater Mass Spectrometer (UMS) will help understand changes caused by the oil spill.

- Part 2: more details about the oil spill and SRI's marine research; it describes the use of SRI's Underwater Mass Spectrometer to quantify the 3D concentration of hydrocarbons in the ocean to understand their impact on the ocean ecosystem and on the food chain.
