Donald Shockey Honored with 2006 Murray Medal by the Society for Experimental Mechanics
MENLO PARK, Calif. -- May 25, 2006 -- SRI International, an independent, nonprofit research and development organization, today announced that Donald A. Shockey, Ph.D., director of SRI’s Center for Fracture Physics, has been selected to receive the 2006 W. M. Murray Medal by the Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM).
The award recognizes sustained and distinguished technical contributions to the field of experimental mechanics. Dr. Shockey is an internationally renowned expert in the fracture behavior of materials, and an authority on material failures under impact and explosive loads. He and his colleagues pioneered an approach that links microscopic failure processes with the macro behavior of structures, leading to better prediction and control of material failures.
Dr. Shockey will be presented with the Murray Medal immediately following his delivery of the Murray Lecture titled "Rosetta Stone Experiments," on Wednesday, June 7, 2006, during the SEM Annual Conference and Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri. The Murray Medal is the Society’s most prestigious award, named in honor of Dr. William MacGregor Murray, the first president and a long-time board member of SEM.
SEM is a professional society of engineers and scientists interested in the research and application of engineering measurements and test methods. Its mission is to promote education, research and application of experimental mechanics to better understand the physical phenomena that impede technological progress.
