Gary Brown, Director of SRI's National Center for Maritime and Port Security, Appointed to the National Maritime Security Advisory Committee
MENLO PARK, Calif.– May 27, 2008– SRI International today announced Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has named SRI's Gary Brown to a one-year appointment as a member and advisor to the National Maritime Security Advisory Committee (NMSAC). Brown, a retired brigadier general in the U.S. Marine Corps, is head of the SRI-led National Center for Maritime and Port Security in St. Petersburg, Florida.
This year's first NMSAC meeting was held on April 16, 2008 in Portsmouth, VA. The committee is helping to establish policy guidelines to enhance national and homeland security by protecting U.S. maritime interests. The committee was formed in 2001 to underscore the importance of securing the U.S. maritime domain.
The NMSAC was established under authority of the Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 (Public Law 107-295) and operates in accordance with the provisions of the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA -5 U.S.C. App. 2). The NMSAC provides advice to the Department of Homeland Security Secretary via the Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard regarding national security strategy and policy, actions required to meet current and future security threats, international cooperation on security issues, and security concerns of the maritime transportation industry.
