Gary Swan Elected President of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco

Swan, Ph.D., director of SRI International's Center for Health Sciences, has been elected by the membership of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) as its president-elect and will serve as president in 2012. SRNT is a major venue for quality scientific research about nicotine, both at SRNT meetings and in the organization's journal, Nicotine & Tobacco Research.

"As President of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco, I will advocate the importance of innovative research aimed at developing therapies for nicotine addiction, which is attributed to six million deaths per year worldwide," said Dr. Swan. "SRI's study of basic and clinical aspects of nicotine addiction is advancing effective smoking cessation treatments and policies. Further scientific research is needed to fully understand nicotine dependence and how it can be prevented and stopped."

The Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco includes top experts on nicotine and tobacco from countries around the world. Its mission is to stimulate new knowledge about nicotine, from molecular research to its impact on public health. The Society sponsors scientific meetings and publications, encourages scientific research on public health efforts, and provides expert advice to public policy and governmental agencies.

SRNT was founded in 1994 as a multidisciplinary society to foster the exchange of information on the biological, behavioral, social, and economic effects of nicotine and tobacco. It has evolved into the principal center of communication for nicotine and tobacco scientists around the world.
