Marcus Sachs Joins SRI International as Deputy Director in Computer Science Laboratory
Former Member of the U.S. National Security Council to Lead Operations at Cyber Security Research and Development Center
MENLO PARK, - Calif. April 18, 2005 - Marcus Sachs has joined SRI International, an independent nonprofit research and development organization, as a deputy director. In this role, Mr. Sachs will direct the Washington, D.C. operations of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Cyber Security Research and Development Center, which SRI manages. The Center is the primary vehicle through which the Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency (HSARPA) executes its cyber security R&D programs.

"Marcus will provide leadership and counsel as we forge new partnerships among government and private industry, the venture capital community and the research community to protect our nation's cyber infrastructure."
In 2002, Mr. Sachs was appointed by President Bush to serve concurrently on the staff of the National Security Council as the Director for Communication Infrastructure Protection in the White House Office of Cyberspace Security, and on the staff of the President's Critical Infrastructure Protection Board. The Board was created to coordinate critical infrastructure protection issues across all U.S. federal agencies in partnership with industry.
As a member of the White House staff, Mr. Sachs coordinated efforts to protect and secure the nation's telecommunication and Internet infrastructures, leveraging expertise from U.S. Government agencies, the domestic private sector and the international community. He also participated in bilateral and multilateral talks with officials from Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom to develop policies for protecting cyber and physical infrastructures. After the White House's National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace was published, Mr. Sachs joined the National Cyber Security Division of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, where he was responsible for developing the implementation plan for the strategy. While at the Department, he developed the initial concept and strategy for the U.S. Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT).
Mr. Sachs was an officer in the Army's Corps of Engineers for more than 20 years. He specialized in computer network operations, systems automation and information technology. As a Senior Operations Analyst and Technical Director in the Defense Department's Joint Task Force for Computer Network Defense, he investigated several high-profile computer network incidents and prepared defensive strategies. Mr. Sachs has an M.S. in Computer Science with a concentration in Information Security from James Madison University, an M.S. in Science and Technology Commercialization from the University of Texas, and a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is a graduate of the Army's Command and General Staff College, the Army Engineer School, the Army Signal School, and the Army's Airborne and Air Assault schools.
