Oil and Gas Infrastructure

MENLO PARK, Calif. -- September 12, 2006 -- SRI International, an independent nonprofit research and development organization, today announced its role in the LOGIIC Consortium, which has successfully completed a project to improve the security of the nation’s oil and gas critical infrastructure, helping to protect it from cyber security threats such as viruses, worms and cyber terrorism.  SRI played a key role in the formation of the consortium and in all phases of the project. In several workshops organized by SRI, industry experts defined the scope of the project. SRI provided technical expertise in the area of attack detection and security event correlation throughout the project. SRI also helped coordinate the project with other research and development initiatives in security for control systems.

The goal of the LOGIIC Correlation Project was to leverage the collective resources of oil and gas companies, the United States Department of Homeland Security, and technology vendors to identify and demonstrate new technologies to help protect oil and gas process control systems.

"Where computers are used, there is always a risk that an unauthorized party can gain access to the system and extract or manipulate information or disrupt operations. While all industry sectors using process control systems need to protect their systems against cyber attacks, this is particularly critical for the oil and gas sector, where catastrophic events could cause significant losses in terms of human lives, the environment and the economy," said Ulf Lindqvist, program director at SRI International.

The LOGIIC Correlation Project working group was comprised of experts in homeland security, oil and gas, security research, security technology and process control technology.

  • Government:  U.S. Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate
  • Oil and gas industry: Chevron, CITGO, BP and Ergon Refining
  • Research:  Sandia National Laboratories, SRI International and Adventium Labs
  • Security vendors:  ArcSight, 3Com and Symantec Corporation
  • Process control technology vendors: Honeywell, OMNI Flow Computers and Telvent

Project results were shared at the LOGIIC Summit on September 11, 2006, in Houston, Texas. More information, including a summary of the LOGIIC Correlation project and results, can be found at the LOGIIC website http://www.logiic.org.

SRI's work in the LOGIIC consortium is supported by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Interior (DOI) under Contract No. NBCHF040146.
