Sarnoff Corporation Receives Second IEEE Milestone Plaque
September 18, 2006
A team of engineers from RCA’s David Sarnoff Research Center, now Sarnoff Corporation, will be honored in a ceremony by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers with the coveted IEEE Milestone plaque for the invention of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) September 30th.
The invention of the LCD was a project led by George Heilmeier with Louis Zanoni and Lucian Barton forty years ago to develop the next generation of display technology. Their method for the electronic control of light reflected from liquid crystals was a revolutionary development. Today, LCDs are used in the production of millions of displays annually for watches, calculators, instruments, telephones, televisions, and computers. Flat panel video displays dominate the market and have changed the way the world views information on screen.
“Sarnoff Corporation and its scientists and engineers are the heirs to pioneering innovations and excellence in video technologies,” said Ashok Prabhu, vice president, Device Technologies and Applications at Sarnoff Corporation. “This is the second IEEE Milestone we have received and we are very pleased to have the efforts of our engineers recognized by the world’s largest and most respected engineering organization again.
The ceremony will take place in the Sarnoff Auditorium in Princeton, N.J. from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. and co-inventor Louis Zanoni will discuss the invention of LCDs at the ceremony. Pre-ceremony activities include an all-day open house of the David Sarnoff Library’s exhibits and a reception at 4:00 p.m.
