Café Scientifique Silicon Valley Has New Home at SRI International
SRI International, an independent, nonprofit research and development organization, today announced that it is the new host for Café Scientifique Silicon Valley. Café Scientifique is a grassroots organization that holds informal monthly gatherings where community members can interact with leading scientists on current topics in science and technology. Past topics have included human genetics, the San Francisco 1906 earthquake, and nanotechnology. Events are free and open to the public.
Café Scientifique Silicon Valley's first event at SRI’s International Building, located at 333 Ravenswood Avenue in Menlo Park, California, will be on Tuesday, January 9 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The featured speaker will be Terry Root, Ph.D., Senior Fellow in the Woods Institute for the Environment and Professor in the Biological Sciences Department at Stanford University. Her work suggests that protecting species on earth is no longer just a habitat protection issue, but also one of limiting climate change. Café Scientifique Silicon Valley at SRI, formerly called Café Scientifique Palo Alto, is the first organization of its kind on the West Coast. It is part of a growing international trend of "science cafes" where scientists, technologists, and other researchers interact with community members to promote knowledge in casual settings.
"SRI is proud to work with Café Scientifique Silicon Valley to promote public engagement on current topics in science and technology," said Walter Moos, vice president of SRI’s Biosciences Division. "As science impacts so many aspects of our lives, it is wonderful to have a venue where researchers can engage in dialogue with Silicon Valley residents." Dr. Moos will serve on Café Scientifique Silicon Valley’s advisory board.
Café Scientifique Silicon Valley is sponsored by Roxro Pharma, Inc., of Menlo Park. The organization's co-founders are Dr. Roger Whiting, president and chief scientific officer of Roxro and Nancy Peterson, a Palo Alto-based communications consultant. Details regarding future speakers, and other information about Café Scientifique Silicon Valley, are available at www.cafescisv.org.
