Welcome to the Web home of the National Longitudinal Transition Study-2 (NLTS2)!

NLTS2 is a study begun in 2001 and funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Over the next 10 years, NLTS2 will document the in-school and out-of-school experiences of a national sample of students as they move from high school into adult roles.

NLTS2 will focus on a wide range of important topics, such as high school coursework, extracurricular activities, academic performance, postsecondary education and training, employment, independent living, and community participation.

NLTS2 will produce information of interest to many audiences, including state and local education agencies, the U.S. Congress, the U.S. Department of Education, parents, teachers, researchers, advocates, and policy-makers.

The first year of parent phone interviews was a success! More than 9,000 parents and guardians completed phone interviews or family surveys in fall 2001, for an 82% response rate. We are indebted to them for contributing their valuable time to provide information. It has been rewarding for us to work with parents across the country. Results from the NLTS2 parent survey will soon be available.

We have now completed data collection activities for the 2001-2002 school year. We sent out thousands of survey questionnaires to teachers to fill out. Students ages 16 to 18 also participated in face-to-face assessments that covered academics and social attitudes.

We will begin our second round of parent/youth interviews in the spring of 2003 and continue through the summer of 2003. We look forward to speaking with families again about their experiences.
