Human Sleep Research Program: Current Projects & Volunteer Opportunities

ALCOHOLISM, SLEEP, AND THE BRAIN

Principal Investigator: Ian M. Colrain, Ph.D., Director, Human Sleep Research Program, SRI International

The purpose of this study is to investigate how changes in the physical structure of the brain associated with growing older and drinking heavily may affect sleep. This study is funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). We are currently recruiting participants for the study.

We are looking for social drinkers (less than 1-2 drinks per day) as well as recently sober alcoholics (less than 1 month sober), with:

No metal inside the body
No diagnosis of sleep-breathing disorder (apnea)

The study involves 4 overnight sleep stays in the SRI International Human Sleep Laboratory and 3 MRI scans (no radiation) completed over a 3-month period.

Participants receive $600 for completing the study.

Please call 650-859-5139 or 650-859-3897, or email sleep@sri.com for more information.

SLEEP QUALITY IN MENOPAUSAL WOMEN

Principal Investigator: Fiona C. Baker, Ph.D., Sleep Physiologist, SRI International

Sleep complaints are common as women begin to get irregular menstrual cycles during the transition to menopause, yet we have little understanding of what drives this increase in sleep disturbance and how best to treat it.  The purpose of this NIH-sponsored study is to investigate sleep quality in women who are beginning to notice changes in their cycles but who have not yet stopped having their periods.

This study is currently recruiting. If you are interested in participating or would like more information on this study, contact us at (650) 859-3897 or email sleep@sri.com.

ALCOHOL, SLEEP, AND BRAIN DEVELOPMENT

Principal Investigator: Ian M. Colrain, Ph.D., Director, Human Sleep Research Program, SRI International

This study examines how brain structure and sleep are altered by adolescent development, and the impact of alcohol use on this development. The purpose of this study is to look at the development of brain structure and function in normal, healthy adolescents over the next 18 months in order to examine the feasibility of conducting a prospective longitudinal evaluation of the influence of alcohol on brain development using sleep, cognitive function, and brain MRI measures.

This study is not actively recruiting at this time.

ATLAST: A Multicenter, Prospective, Extension Study of the Attune™ Sleep Apnea System for the Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

Principal Investigator: Ian M. Colrain, Ph.D., Director, Human Sleep Research Program, SRI International

Sleep-related breathing disorders are conditions that diminish the exchange of air, into and out of the lungs, during sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the most common of these conditions, produces cyclical respiratory events during which airflow is temporarily restricted or blocked due to pharyngeal airway obstruction. The Attune Sleep Apnea System is designed to treat obstructive sleep apnea. The objective of the study is to evaluate continued effectiveness of the Attune Sleep Apnea System.

This study is not actively recruiting at this time.
