Michael Coggiola
Manager, Mass Spectrometry Group

Molecular Physics Laboratory

Michael Coggiola is the manager of the Mass Spectrometry Group within the Molecular Physics Laboratory. His research experience covers a wide range of topics including gas-phase atomic and molecular collision processes, low-energy electron-molecule scattering, multiphoton processes in molecular beams, surface-ion scattering, field ionization mass spectrometry, analytical instrumentation, real-time chemical characterization of aerosols, and ultra-trace chemical vapor detection.

While at SRI, Dr. Coggiola has been directly involved in projects studying

  • Laser-induced fluorescence of metastable rare gases
  • De-excitation of excited atoms by optical emission
  • Scattering studies using state-selected beams
  • Production and characterization of metastable negative ions
  • Angular scattering effects in double charge-transfer reactions
  • Surface-ion scattering and charge exchange
  • Real-time chemical characterization of single particles in the lower troposphere
  • Development of mass spectrometer based chemical agent detection instruments
  • Development of GC-MS instruments using field ionization MS
  • Development of ultra-sensitive vapor detector based on Jet-REMPI TOF-MS

Dr. Coggiola is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Physical Society, and the American Society for Mass Spectrometry. He is the author of more than 50 publications on molecular beam collisions, analytical instrumentation, mass spectrometry, and trace vapor detection.

He holds a B.S. (with honors) in chemistry (1969) from the University of California, Berkeley; a Ph.D. in chemical physics (1974) from the California Institute of Technology. His studies included a postdoctoral fellowship with Nobel Laureate Yuan T. Lee at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory.
