Gregory W. Faris
Senior Physicist
Molecular Physics Laboratory
Dr. Faris, a Senior Physicist in the Molecular Physics Laboratory, has been employed at SRI since 1988. His areas of expertise include biomedical optics, nonlinear optics, laser development, and optical diagnostics.
At SRI, Dr. Faris has led research teams on a range of projects including:
- Stimulated scattering in liquids, gases, and solids
- VUV generation and spectroscopy
- Imaging and property measurements in turbid media
- Microfluidics
- Novel reporters for biomedical diagnostics
- Laser-based techniques for environmental monitoring
- Consulting and due diligence
Dr. Faris is the Associate Editor for Biomedical Optics for Applied Optics, and regularly serves on study sections (review panels) for the National Institutes of Health. He is a member of the Optical Society of America, SPIE-The International Society for Optical Engineering, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Sigma Xi. He is the author of more than 60 publications on lasers and optical technology and 7 patents. He holds a B.S.E. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (summa cum laude, 1980) from Princeton University and a Ph.D. in Applied Physics (1986) from Stanford University. He has been an NSF Postdoctoral Fellow at the Lund Institute of Technology, Lund, Sweden, and a Postdoctoral Fellow at SRI International.
