Brian Sharpee
Postdoctoral Fellow, Astronomy

Molecular Physics Laboratory

Brian Sharpee joined SRI's Molecular Physics Laboratory as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Astronomy in 2003. His research fields include the study of the kinetics, chemistry, and structure of the quiescent nighttime atmosphere using high-resolution spectra of the night sky obtained with astronomical instrumentation, and the measurement of fundamental atomic parameters of the optically forbidden emission lines observed in these spectra.

His background is in nebular astrophysics where he is interested in nebular elemental abundances, the processes that give rise to weak atomic emission lines in their spectra, and in fundamental parameter calculations that allow these lines to be used to derive abundances. He has also worked on observational projects involving evolved variable stars.

Brian has a B.S. in Physics from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (1995), a M.S. in Physics from Michigan State University (1999), and a Ph.D. in Astronomy and Astrophysics from Michigan State University (2003). He is also a member of the American Astronomical Society and the American Geophysical Union.
