Coatings
Corrosion-resistant coatings can significantly increase the lifetime
of materials while reducing maintenance and replacement costs. SRI
uses a variety of coatings and coating techniques to address client
needs in specific applications such as corrosion protection of incinerators,
heat exchangers, chemical heat pumps, and rebars in concrete. We
focus on developing new coatings and coating techniques that allow
deposition at lower temperatures and lower cost. Most of our recent
developments have been in corrosion protection of metals in highly
aggressive environments.
A process for making diffusion coatings at lower temperatures
and shorter timeframes than typical pack cementation is being used
in numerous applications. Our research has helped reduce the thermal
budget for the coating process, making it competitive with other
coating technologies. We have also obtained deep diffusion depths
of protective elements in low-cost substrate materials that provide
excellent corrosion and erosion resistance for the substrate material
in highly aggressive environments.
SRI's research in coatings is funded by NCHRP, GRI, and commercial
clients. Potential application areas for the research include:
- Chemical heat pumps
- Petrochemical industry
- Incinerators
- Boilers
- Steam turbines
- Residential and commercial heaters
- Condensing heat exchangers
- Waste treatment plants
