Preceramic Polymers Synthesis and Applications
SRI is creating new products and processes for ceramics and
polymeric materials that are resulting in less expensive processing
and improved material durability for harsh environments, including
bio-inert or bio-active surfaces and high temperature hydrophobic
materials. These proprietary advances are a result of extensive SRI
research in polymeric materials, ceramics, inorganic synthesis, and
organosilicon chemistry.
Advantage
The materials made possible by SRI's research are very stable and heat resistant, less expensive (by a
factor of 10 to as high as 1,000 times), and more flexible than alternatives. Synthesis routes are more
versatile with SRIs approach than with a single or a limited number of polymers made by competitors.
SRI's processes can be easily modified, providing added processing flexibility. Curing techniques
can also be modified to suit processing needs.
Opportunity
SRI's preceramic polymer technology is in various stages of progress. Strong opportunities exist for
commercial licensing and use in manufacturing. Applications are infinite using a spectrum of possible
materials and capabilities, including coatings, foams, weather resistant materials, filters, membranes,
hydrophilic surfaces, coupled with a range of processes. SRI works with clients to tailor materials and
processes to their specific needs.
