Lightweight Ballistic Fabric Armor
SRI is applying advances in polymer fibers to create
lightweight armor for ballistic protection when armor weight must be minimal. This armor offers
protection against bullets and fragments for police, bomb squads, prison guards, soldiers, and
peace-keeping forces and can be used in commercial and military aircraft, VIP limousines, and private
vehicles (for certain citizens).
The fabric has potential applications within the airline industry if the FAA approves its use within
the walls of commercial aircraft fuselages to prevent damage from turbine engine fragments in the
event of an uncontained engine failure.

Advantage
The lightweight fabric armor provides a substantial weight advantage over conventional armors, which
can be cumbersome to wear and transport. Other important qualities include flexibility and relatively
high heat tolerance, especially in comparison with Kevlar and Spectra fabrics now on the market.
Opportunity
SRI's lightweight armor fabrication can be licensed for manufacture for any commercial or law
enforcement purpose. SRI has patents pending for its new ballistic armor fabric.
