Hydrolytic Polymers
SRI's new hydrolytic polymers offer both economical and environmental benefits
by allowing easy breakdown of polymers through hydrolysis under specific
acidic or basic conditions. The chemical process of decomposition occurs by
splitting a bond and adding the elements of water, which allows the polymers
to be degraded and disposed of in a chemically mild or "normal" environment.
Advantage
SRI's unique approach offers the potential for much more cost-effective
disposable plastics than are currently produced. The easily degradable
polymeric materials significantly reduce waste from single-use products
otherwise disposed of in landfills.
Opportunity
SRI's new polymer technology represents a significant innovation for chemical
companies and plastics manufacturers, making it possible for them to develop
cost-effective, environmentally friendly plastic products. Applications
include the general categories of disposable plastics, food packaging and
diapers, along with waste disposal and medical uses.
