R&D

Today's exciting opportunities require innovative thinking, practical know-how, and tremendous depth and breadth of expertise. Over 65 years, SRI has built such a foundation while partnering with our clients to address some of their toughest challenges. In the last decade alone, we have conducted more than $4B of R&D. Learn more about SRI's disciplined approach to innovation.

SRI conducts client-sponsored research and development for government agencies, commercial businesses, foundations, and other organizations. SRI also brings its innovations to the marketplace by licensing its intellectual property and creating new ventures.

To serve our clients effectively, we are organized into divisions of major core competencies, each with an interdisciplinary approach to meeting client needs: Engineering & Systems Group, Policy Division, Information and Computing Sciences Division, Biosciences Division, and Physical Sciences Division.

Discover more about the divisions below, or use the drop-down menu for a complete list of SRI's divisions, labs, centers, and major programs. Or, click on a link on the left to explore our capabilities categorized by focus area.

The Engineering & Systems Group, SRI's largest organization, includes three divisions: Engineering Research and Development, Information Systems, and Products and Services. The Group conducts engineering research, systems engineering and development, product development and fielding, and integration services, primarily for government clients. Areas of expertise include automation; intelligence systems; distributed information processing; environmental impact studies; geospace studies; marine science; medical devices development; radar; signal processing; communications; and testing, evaluation, and field support.

The Policy Division helps government agencies, private foundations, and commercial clients solve problems and capitalize on opportunities posed by complex issues in education, health, economic development, and human services. Policy experts develop research-based solutions to problems posed by rapid social, technological, and economic changes in society. The research is used to shape innovations to improve productivity and the quality of life at home, at school, and in the workplace.

The Information and Computing Sciences Division develops and advances new technologies in machine intelligence, speech and natural language, perception and visual sciences, bioinformatics, formal methods, and computer security. The group's pioneering innovations have been leading the field of computer science for decades.

The Biosciences Division is a unique organization with all of the resources necessary to take chemical and biological research programs from Idea to IND® — from initial discoveries to investigational new drug applications to start human clinical trials. The Biosciences Division performs basic research on disease mechanisms like an academic institution; drug discovery and the development of biologics like a biotechnology or pharmaceutical company; and full-service nonclinical contract research and development like a CRO (contract research organization).

The Physical Sciences Division offers multidisciplinary teams to solve technical challenges through laboratory experiments, computer simulations, and testing. The group works on projects ranging from fundamental science to pilot-scale testing and commercialization of products.
