Metabolic Diseases
Metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity occur when abnormal chemical reactions disrupt the hormonal regulation of the body's absorption and utilization of food. To find treatments, diabetes research and obesity research are ongoing. Researchers at SRI's Center for Advanced Drug Research engage in metabolic disease research to develop novel molecules to control hormonal regulation.
Using bioinformatics tools, SRI researchers also study the chemical reaction pathways of metabolism. MetaCyc, from the SRI BioCyc database collection, is the largest database of experimentally determined and literature-curated metabolic pathways currently available to the metabolism research community.
